WINNING HAS ITS PRIVILEGES: DENVER POLL BOOSTS BRONCOS

A Monday night KUSA-TV poll "continues to gain momentum
and scored its biggest support" for building the Broncos a
new stadium by extending the sales tax used to build Coors
Field, according to Jim Kirksey of the DENVER POST. The
poll surveyed 500 Denver residents, and 61% said "yes" to
the tax, up from 55% earlier this month. Last August, the
poll showed only 47% supported the measure. In the current
poll, 34% said "no" to the tax extension. The margin of
error was +/- 4.5% (DENVER POST, 1/27). The CO legislature
"is expected to take up a bill that would permit the stadium
vote in May rather than November, a move that may prompt
opponents to challenge it as a violation of Amendment 1 --
which requires tax votes to be taken at general elections."
The Broncos want the vote soon because the estimated cost of
the stadium "continues to rise" (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 1/27).
