NAMES IN THE NEWS

          MAGIC JOHNSON's late-night talk show, "The Magic Hour,"
     is the cover story of BROADCASTING & CABLE.  While some
     believe the crowded time period and Johnson's "lack of
     experience will work against him," Twentieth Television and
     Johnson "are betting big dollars" the new show "will not be a
     summertime failure" (B&C, 1/19).  His show, "The Magic Hour,"
     will be seen in 75% of the country (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER,
     1/21)....Hockey East Commissioner JOE BERTAGNA issued a
     season pass to RICK PITINO, after Pitino was spotted at a BU-
     BC hockey game.  Bertagna: "That's a nice endorsement" (THE
     HOCKEY NEWS, 1/23 issue)....B.A.T., THE BASEBALL ASSISTANCE
     TEAM, held its annual awards dinner at the N.Y. Marriott
     Marquis last night.  This year's theme was MLB's 100 Most
     Memorable Moments (B.A.T.)....Former Redskins OG RAY SCHOENKE
     announced his candidacy for MD Governor (WASHINGTON POST,
     1/21)....Bucs QB TRENT DILFER will perform in a comedy sketch
     with RICHARD SIMMONS on NBC's special Super Bowl Sunday
     edition of the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.  The segment was
     arranged by CA-based Riprock Inc. (THE DAILY).
