DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR? A PRINCE, A PRINCE, BOXING TONIGHT
Published December 19, 1997
HBO will televise the Prince Naseem Hamed-Kevin Kelly
WBO featherweight title bout tonight from MSG at 9:00 pm ET.
HBO has a six-fight deal worth a "reported" $12M with Hamed
(NEWSDAY, 12/19). In Boston, Ron Borges calls Hamed the
"loudest British invasion" of the U.S. "since the Beatles."
Borges: "HBO is obviously banking on Hamed having more going
for him than his 20-minute, smoke-filled introductions, his
tart tongue, and his somersaults into the ring over the top
rope, which, as signature moves go, ranks right up there
with the Ali shuffle." HBO has put $1.75M into advertising
tonight's fight (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/19). In N.Y., Michael
Katz writes that MSG is expecting a crowd of "at least"
12,000 tonight (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/19).
