IS BEESTON'S STAY AT MLB OFFICE TIED TO SELIG'S FUTURE?

Before MLB Acting Commissioner Bud Selig "can drop the
'acting' from the unofficial title by which he has been
known for more than five years, or before he can shed the
label entirely, he has to decide which part of his life is
tugging harder at his head and heart: his team and its park-
under construction or [MLB COO] Paul Beeston," according to
Murray Chass of the N.Y. TIMES. Beeston "wants Selig to
become commissioner; he feels so strongly about it, in fact,
that if someone else gets the job he very likely will look
for work elsewhere. He did not say that in a recent
interview, but another baseball official says he has told
Selig that." Selig "is reluctant to discuss the continued
speculation" about the job of commissioner, as he continues
to interview candidates with Commissioner Search Committee
and Rockies Chair Jerry McMorris. Chass: "The commissioner
search has been so quiet that some people are skeptical that
it is taking place. But the secrecy has held because only
Selig and McMorris have been involved in the interviewing
process that has reduced the list of candidates, one
official said, to three" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/12).
