NEW POLL FINDS THAT TRIAD VOTERS DON'T SUPPORT BALLPARK TAX

As NC businessman Don Beaver works to bring the Twins
to NC, a new poll shows that voters in Forsyth and Guilford,
NC, counties "overwhelmingly oppose new taxes to pay for a
major-league ballpark in the Triad," according to David Rice
of the WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL. Of those polled, 71% said
they were opposed to a tax of $.01 on the dollar on prepared
foods and $.50 on event tickets to help pay for a ballpark.
Twenty percent favored the proposal, and 9% were undecided.
Pro-stadium supporters "discounted the poll's results,"
saying that the wording of the questions strayed too far
from the language that voters will see on the ballot. NC
voters will go to the polls in May on the ballpark measure.
Other results showed that 21% said that if the Twins were
definitely moving to NC, they would be more likely to
support the stadium proposal. But 19% said they would be
less likely, and 57% said it would have no effect. Also,
72% said they would watch Twins games on TV "very" or
"somewhat" often, and 76% said they would not attend at
least four games a year if tickets cost $15. The poll, by
     Mason-Dixon Political/Media Research, surveyed 440 likely
voters in the two counties from December 9-10 for the
newspaper. The margin of error was +/- 5% (JOURNAL, 12/14).
