MAIL IT IN: FEDEX BECOMES NEW TITLE SPONSOR OF CART

FedEx and CART reached a three-year agreement, with an
option for a fourth year, for title sponsorship of the FedEx
Championship Series. FedEx will also become the Official
Transportation Company of the series, and will transport
parts and equipment to each race (CART). In Indianapolis,
Bill Koenig reports that the deal "could run as much" as $9-
10M a year. Koening writes that CART hopes FedEx's
involvement "can help boost the idea that the organization's
circuit is, indeed, a series," not individual races. PA-
based PPG Industries, which has sponsored the CART series
for the past 18 years, will remain involved in CART, and the
championship trophy "still will be called the PPG Cup"
(INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS, 12/10). Also in Indy, Robin Miller
writes that while FedEx's "strong visibility is just what
this organization needs, enough can't be said about" PPG
Industries. Miller adds that PPG has "continually come to
the rescue" of Indy cars, and has provided "an estimated"
     $150M since CART's inception in '79 (STAR-NEWS, 12/10).
