Bobby Brett said Monday that he and Lamar Hunt "have
talked about joining forces to buy the Royals and that, even
though nothing came of those recent discussions, the door
was open to future talks," according to Charles Crumpley of
the K.C. STAR. A source close to Hunt confirmed Monday that
Hunt has submitted an application to seek pre-approval to
possibly bid for the Royals. Brett's group also submitted
an application. Brett: "But if it's mutually beneficial, we
might join forces with the Hunts." Hunt Sports Group
President Tim Connolly confirmed the merger discussions
between the two groups (K.C. STAR, 11/11). In K.C.,
columnist Joe Posnanski calls Hunt's potential ownership of
the team "the single-best thing that could happen to the
Royals, Kansas City and baseball. ... The man is magic,
always has been" (K.C. STAR, 11/11). Meanwhile, potential
Royals bidder Jerry Green said Monday he felt the Royals
directors were "deceptive" and "disingenuous" last week when
they disputed Green's figures for losses sustained by the
team. Green claimed that the Royals were losing $10-12M a
year, but Royals spokesperson Dean Davison said, "Those are
not accurate numbers that Mr. Green is tossing about. ...
[T]hose numbers are grossly overstated" (K.C. STAR, 11/11).
