Pacers Coach LARRY BIRD is profiled by Charles Pierce
in ESQUIRE. Pierce: "He's heard ever since taking the job
that he is going to hate what's become of the NBA - that he
will find himself surrounded by hysterically wealthy
players, most of whom don't know how to play the game
correctly and have no desire to learn." Bird: "Look, it's a
players' league, and everybody knows that. ... I'm not going
to call every play from the bench. It slows the game down,
and I think the game is just fine" (ESQUIRE, 11/97 issue).
