          Pacers Coach LARRY BIRD is profiled by Charles Pierce
     in ESQUIRE.  Pierce: "He's heard ever since taking the job
     that he is going to hate what's become of the NBA - that he
     will find himself surrounded by hysterically wealthy
     players, most of whom don't know how to play the game
     correctly and have no desire to learn."  Bird: "Look, it's a
     players' league, and everybody knows that. ... I'm not going
     to call every play from the bench.  It slows the game down,
     and I think the game is just fine" (ESQUIRE, 11/97 issue).
     ...NBC's "Saturday Night Live" will include a "SuperFans"
     skit with MIKE DITKA, CHRIS FARLEY and GEORGE WENDT (USA
     TODAY, 10/23)....DON SHULA, ALEX ENGLISH, and PHIL NIEKRO
     will be among those honored at the 22ND ANNUAL ALL SPORTS
     HALL OF FAME DINNER, to be held November 5 at the Waldorf-
     Astoria in New York.  The event, which honors '97 inductees
     into the Baseball, Basketball, Pro Football, Golf, Hockey
     and Tennis Halls of Fame, benefits The Boys Club of New York
     (All Sports Hall Of Fame Dinner)...."GMA" contributor REX

     Marlins' DARREN DAULTON, on playing in the cold weather:
     "It's kinda like molasses, you know, when you pour it out in
