In Detroit, Patricia Montemurri writes that a "secret
buyer" is purchasing property in a "chunk of downtown
Detroit expected to provide parking for new baseball and
football stadiums." Speculation "centers on" Tigers Owner
Mike Ilitch as the buyer (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 9/29)....In
Washington, Pan & Heath write that during the second game at
the new Jack Kent Cooke Stadium the "sprawling traffic jams
... all but disappeared" (WASHINGTON POST, 9/29)....In St.
Paul, Charley Walters wrote there is a "rumor" that in '98
the NFL plans to reserve Sundays at Ohio Stadium in
Columbus, "in case the Vikings decide to make a quick exit
from the Metrodome by buying out their lease for" $25M. But
that rumor "is news" to Ohio State assistant AD Pete Hagen,
who said Ohio Stadium will be "shut down the third week in
November next year for renovation" (St. Paul PIONEER PRESS,
9/28)....San Diego Mayor Susan Golding "all but endorsed a
new downtown baseball stadium ... just as she announced a
new 18-member task force to recommend a location for the
project and how to pay for it." She "promised" task force
meetings would be open to the public (UNION-TRIBUNE, 9/27).
