LEAGUE NOTES

While Pete Rose has "taken a preliminary step" in his
pursuit for reinstatement to MLB, two high-ranking MLB
officials told Murray Chass of the N.Y. TIMES that his
effort, if he applies, "will fail" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/12)...
..In Dallas, Barry Horn: "Seven of the NFL's openers failed
to sell out, and five of the 15 games in Week 2 came in
10,000 or more under capacity. Two words NFL czars might
want to consider: radical realignment" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS,
9/12)....Lamar Odom withdrew his application for admission
to the Univ. of RI. While no reason was given, Anthony
McCarron of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS writes the "validity of
Odom's ACT score ... has come into question." Steve Stein,
Odom's attorney, said the 17-year-old's options include the
CBA, overseas or another college (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/12)...
ESPN's Gene Wojciechowski reported that the NCAA has sent
five copies of an anti-gambling poster to every college
athletic department. In big, bold, white letters, the
poster reads, "Don't Bet On It" ("SportsCenter," 9/10).
