The SLOC for the 2002 Olympics elected Frank Joklik
President & CEO, replacing Tom Welch, who resigned in July.
Joklik had served as Chair of the SLOC since '95 (SLOC). In
Salt Lake, Mike Gorrell writes that the "critical" question
now remains of who will replace Joklik as SLOC Chair (SALT
LAKE TRIBUNE, 8/27). USA TODAY's Mike Dodd speculates that
UT-based First Security Bank CEO Spencer Eccles and former
speaker of the UT House of Representatives Nolan Karras are
possibilities (USA TODAY, 8/27). Joklik, 69, on his age:
"I'm old enough to get the job done" (USA TODAY, 8/27).
WELCH PACKAGE: The SLOC also formally approved a
compensation package to former SLOC CEO Tom Welch. He will
receive $10,000 a month as a consultant to the 2002 Games
and $500,000 in retirement benefits, plus more than $100,000
in interest earnings, according to Lisa Riley Roche of the
DESERET NEWS. The $500,000 retirement benefit is subject to
the Salt Lake Games being profitable, as are other pensions
for top SLOC execs. Organizers plan to set aside $500,000
for Welch by May 31, '98, and allow him to keep the interest
the money earns, up to $102,900 (DESERET NEWS, 8/26).
LOGO UNVEILING: The SLOC will unveil its new logo this
Friday, to be broadcast live by local news programs (SLOC).
