PHILADELPHIA COLUMNIST SAYS PHILLIES NEED NEW VISIONARIES

The Phillies need "a drastic change in ownership,"
according to columnist Timothy Dwyer of the PHILADELPHIA
INQUIRER, who writes, team Chair Bill Giles and "his silent
partners have proved that they have no real interest in
building a winning team," and adds Giles "has neither the
juice nor the money to get a stadium built." Dwyer suggests
two Philadelphia-area candidates for team ownership: Vincent
Piazza Sr., who was part of a group that tried to acquire
the Giants, and 76ers/Flyers/CoreState Center minority-owner
Ed Snider. Snider "has proved that he has the connections -
     - financial and otherwise -- and the will to get a facility
built." While Piazza had no comment on possible interest,
Snider said, "I probably wouldn't be [interested], but I'm
not sure. I would only be interested if it made sense in
the big picture in terms of the marketplace and television
     and facilities" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 8/27).
