CFL'S GILES WITHDRAWS RESIGNATION, TAKES OVER AS PRESIDENT

          After Jeff Giles resigned as the CFL's COO in June
     "because he wasn't given the commissioner's job when Larry
     Smith left," he "backtracked" yesterday and accepted the
     position of CFL President & COO, according to the CP.  The
     CFL also said that the search for a permanent commissioner
     has been suspended and the search committee disbanded.  John
     Tory will continue as Chair and Acting Commissioner.  Giles:
     "The league has come back to me and allowed me to put some
     of my ideas and vision to action. ... I don't care what you
     call me, whether it's commissioner or president, as long as
     I have the authority and the responsibility, I think I have
     a lot to contribute to this league. ... We have to make the
     CFL cool again."  According to Giles, part of that plan
     includes a "close association" with the NFL and a "better
     deal" in the next TV contracts (CP/GLOBE & MAIL, 8/26).
