NEW SOCCER LEAGUE TO KICK UP IN CANADA

The Ontario Soccer Association yesterday unveiled plans
for the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL), which
will be based in Ontario, according to Tony Maraschiello in
the TORONTO SUN. The CPSL will be a Divison 3 league by
int'l standards, and "organizers have already secured Adidas
Canada as a major sponsor." The eight-team league is
scheduled to start play next spring. Each team will draft
25 Canadian players of which five must be under 20-years-
old. Teams will also draft 16-year-olds "and own their
rights until they are ready to join the parent club." OSA
Exec Dir Brian Avey: "You are going to see an aggressive
marketing campaign that is similar to what you see in the
NHL or NBA. The image of soccer in the province is at an
all-time low in the public and corporate eye. But we're
trying to make a fresh start" (TORONTO SUN, 8/21).
