ANGELS SUSPEND TONY PHILLIPS WITH PAY; AWAIT MLBPA RESPONSE

          The Angels asked Tony Phillips, who faces a cocaine
     possession charge, to go on the 15-day DL and see a doctor
     designated by Anaheim Sports and enter a rehabilitation
     program.  When Phillips "refused," the team suspended him
     indefinitely with pay (Angels).  In Orange County, Bill
     Shaikin writes that the MLBPA "is expected to file a
     grievance as early as today, challenging the suspension on
     grounds that doctors" for MLB and the MLBPA "cleared
     Phillips to play without entering an inpatient treatment
     program."  Shaikin adds the team is "unlikely to prevail, so
     Phillips could return" in a few days.   Anaheim Sports
     President Tony Tavares: "I'm not interested in anticipating
     what somebody else will do.  We're prepared for it.  I think
     we have taken the step that is in the best interest of the
     ballclub and Tony" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 8/19).
