          Former Islanders Owner JOHN SPANO was indicted in TX
     yesterday on federal charges that he defrauded two lenders of
     at least $5.1M.  Spano faces unrelated fraud charges in NY
     (N.Y. TIMES, 8/14)....In Raleigh, an estimated 5,000-7,000
     people -- "roughly equal numbers of men, women and children"
     -- showed up at an area mall for a one-hour, 45-minute
     autograph session with JEFF GORDON.  Gordon earned about
     $15,000 from the mall and sponsor Pepsi (Raleigh NEWS &
     OBSERVER, 8/14)....ALPHABET CITY SPORTS RECORDS group THE
     SCRAMBLERS will introduce their new album, "Here's To Golf,"
     by performing at the Official All Star Cafe in N.Y. tonight
     at 6:00pm ET (Alphabet City Sports Records).
