WINSTON CUP INVADES LAS VEGAS; SMITH TO ANTE UP BIG BUCKS?

          The 107,000-seat Las Vegas Speedway will host a Winston
     Cup race on Sunday, March 1, 1998, according to John
     Katsilometes of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL.  Tickets go on
     sale September 22 for the inaugural Las Vegas 400, which is
     sponsored by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors
     Authority.  The Las Vegas 400 becomes the 33rd Winston Cup
     event, and NASCAR President Bill France said that will be
     the only race added in '98 (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 8/13). 
     Tickets will cost between $50 and $110 in the grandstand. 
     "Club" seats can be purchased for $350, and suites are
     leased for $60,000 annually (Las Vegas Motor Speedway).
          SMITH WANTS SECONDS: Speedway Motorsports Inc. Chair
     Bruton Smith, in an effort to land a second Winston Cup race
     at his TX Motor Speedway, said yesterday that he will put up
     a $5M for the event, making it the highest-paying event in
     NASCAR history (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 8/13).
