NAMES IN THE NEWS

          MAGIC JOHNSON has backed out of a plan to put a movie
     theater complex in New York's Harlem area.  Ken Lombard,
     President of Magic Johnson Theaters, said the company was
     unable to agree on rent with Harlem developer Robert Seavey
     (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/30)....Among those featured on
     NEWSWEEK's cover story on "The New Rich" are PHIL KNIGHT and
     WAYNE HUIZENGA (NEWSWEEK, 8/4 issue)....Today's S.F.
     CHRONICLE features an extensive profile of sports
     celebrities doubling as motivational speakers, complete with
     fees of some of the top names (S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/30)....In
     Chicago, Michael Sneed reported that Bismarck Enterprises
     Chair PETER WIRTZ filed a $3M countersuit against the
     Chicago Park District (CPD) on Monday, "alleging contract
     violations."  The CPD, which had a concessions contract with
     Wirtz, had sued him "alleging that he underpaid" $1M in
     concession fees.  Wirtz alleges that the CPD suit was "an
     attempt to coerce the Blackhawks into contributing $1
     million to the Park District for construction of ice rinks
     in Chicago" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 7/30).  Wirtz also visited
     the Pocono Raceway, PA, with other business and political
     leaders "to gather first-hand information on the track they
     hope to duplicate in not one, but two locations in" in IL
     and MD (NSSN, 6/23).

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown.
