MEDIA NOTES

ELECTRONIC MEDIA listed their "10 Shows That Made
Cable." The No. 6 spot was given to ESPN's "SportsCenter."
ELECTRONIC MEDIA's Jim McConville: "'SportsCenter' has
changed the way TV covers sports and become a phenomenon, as
much pop culture as sports news" (ELECTRONIC MEDIA, 7/21
issue)....The Golf Channel and Speedvision were approved by
     the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission (CRTC) for broadcast in Canada (Toronto GLOBE &
MAIL, 7/24)....As part of the Time Warner-News Corp. deal
that will result in Time Warner distributing Fox News
Channel on its cable systems, News Corp. has "agreed it
won't block Time Warner's plan to convert WTBS from a
superstation" into a regular cable channel. WTBS broadcasts
Braves games, which could have led to Fox Broadcasting's
blocking of the conversion, due to its contract with MLB
(WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/24). In Atlanta, Charles Haddad
writes "it is believed that Time Warner ... will add Fox
News to 65 percent of its systems within the next four
     years" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 7/24).
