NAMES IN THE NEWS

          In Chicago, Jay Mariotti, on DENNIS RODMAN: "He is past
     tense, way low on the hip quotient.  Pop culture swiftly has
     moved on to something else.  And today, we demand the Bulls
     move on, too" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 7/21).....NASCAR's JEFF
     GORDON is featured in NEWSWEEK.  Gordon's business manager
     Robert Brannan 3rd, is "going for the gold medal of American
     celebrity endorsements, an athletic-shoe endorsement"
     (NEWSWEEK, 7/28)....Marlins Manager JIM LEYLAND confirmed
     that his five-year contract allows him to leave the team if
     it's sold.  Leyland also said that Marlins Owner WAYNE
     HUIZENGA "has purchased Leyland's five-bedroom house in
     northwest Broward County, and has asked Leyland and his
     family to use it at no charge for the duration of Leyland's
     contract" (Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 7/20)....DEAN
     SCHOENWALD, who runs the TN-based "Mascot Mania" training
     school, is featured in the WALL STREET JOURNAL.  Schoenwald
     is set to become owner of the CBA Savannah Banana, pending
     league approval.  The GA-based club "will be totally
     centered on mascots" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/21).
