SOCOG LOOKS TO PLAY TOUGH AGAINST AMBUSH MARKETERS

Organizers for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games (SOCOG),
"angry at what they consider 'emotional ambush' advertising,
are planning a 'shame' campaign directed at non-sponsors of
the Olympics such as international airline Qantas and
National Australia Bank," according to AD AGE. SOCOG
Marketing Manager John Moore: "Our intention is to embarrass
them. They have not paid any money to support the Olympics
and we don't want people to think they have ... we're
dealing with a whole bunch of pretenders and it's about time
the public knows it." Both Qantas and National Australia
Bank have launched ad campaigns that featured Olympic
athletes. SOCOG's Moore says the ads do not breach any
copyright laws, but notes a survey which showed that 40% of
respondents "believe Qantas is the official Olympic
sponsor." But Ansett Airlines paid over $30M for the
sponsorship. In banking, Westpac Banking Group paid around
$25M for its sponsorship. Qantas CEO James Strong said "the
committee's reaction was 'absurd'" (AD AGE, 7/17).
