FCC SAYS CLASSIC SPORTS HAS CASE AGAINST CABLEVISION

The "feud" between Classic Sports Network (CSN) and
Cablevision Systems "reached a new boil yesterday" with an
FCC finding that CSN "had built a case against Cablevision
for demanding ownership" of CSN in exchange for carrying the
network on its Long Island, NY, cable systems, according to
Richard Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES. But, Sandomir writes,
the finding is "preliminary and did not order" Cablevision
to place CSN on the Long Island system that has 2.8 million
subscribers. The FCC has "remanded" the case to an
administrative law judge. Sandomir calls the finding an
"early victory in Classic's attempt to prove that
Cablevision violated a Federal law that bars cable system
owners from demanding financial interests in program
services in exchange for being carried" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/17).
