LEAGUE NOTES

In Chicago, Jerome Holtzman writes that MLB's search
for a commissioner is "likely" to lead to Acting
Commissioner Bud Selig. Holtzman: "Selig has been
insisting, if offered, he would decline. He has had enough.
I'm not so sure. A $5 million annual salary, plus
presidential suites, and the availability of a private jet,
etc., is a tempting lure." Holtzman adds that while many
fans blame Selig for the work stoppage of '94, "I've never
understood why union chief Don Fehr, for the most part, has
escaped criticism" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 7/17)....CART will hold
its first race in Japan on March 28 (USA TODAY, 7/17)....In
Orange County, Bobby Cuza wrote under the header, "In-line
Skating Might Be Rolling Into NHL's Future." Cuza: "[W]hat
gives? Why is the NHL, age-old icon of ice hockey, suddenly
interested in roller hockey?" NHL VP/Fan Development Ken
Yaffe: "The interest in in-line skating has had a great
impact on hockey because, as we've developed this skating
culture of kids, there's been a natural inclination to pick
up a hockey stick" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 7/16).
