AVP JOINS BUILDING BOOM, EYES PERMANENT L.A. STADIUM

The AVP, "stung by court rulings forbidding it to
charge for tickets" at its beach events, said Wednesday that
it plans to build a permanent volleyball stadium somewhere
in L.A., according to Deborah Belgum of the L.A. TIMES. The
announcement came after a "prolonged dispute" with the CA
Coastal Commission left the AVP unable to charge for tickets
at its two major CA tournaments, held each summer in Hermosa
Beach and Manhattan Beach. The AVP has hired a West L.A.
real estate firm to scout the L.A. area for a site. AVP COO
Lon Monk: "I hope that people recognize that irrespective of
building a stadium, we are still going to do everything
within our power to remain on the beaches of Manhattan Beach
and Hermosa Beach. But if we can't, it will make the
stadium a bigger deal." Belgum reports that the AVP "gave
no details of what kind of stadium it would build, where it
would be or how it would be financed" (L.A. TIMES, 7/17).
