Marlins Owner Wayne Huizenga may have been "too
convincing" in stating his losses with the team, "because
the phones weren't ringing off the hook Friday with would-be
local buyers," according to Lebowitz & Fins in the Ft.
Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL. Palm Beach developer Bruce Frey:
"Frankly, my initial thought was if Wayne Huizenga can't
make it, I'm not sure anybody can in this market." Lebowitz
& Fins wrote, Huizenga "promised to do everything possible
to keep the team in South Florida," but "the potential list
is limited. ... [M]any of South Florida's deepest-pocketed
moguls, including some who have expressed interest in
professional sports, indicated they are either too busy or
uninterested" (Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 6/28).
VA MARLINS? If Huizenga fails to find a "suitable local
buyer, a "deep-pocketed group" from northern VA, led by
telecom exec William Collins, is "waiting in the wings,"
according to Lebowitz & Fins. Collins spokesperson Mike
Scanlon: "We're ready for the next available franchise."
Scanlon added the group "heard what (Huizenga) said about
trying to keep the team in South Florida and we certainly
would honor that" (Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 6/28).
