NIKE EYEING EXPANSION IN CANADA? YOUNG'S REVIEW CRITICIZED

British Columbia Premier Glen Clark was in Beaverton,
OR, "trying to convince" Nike execs to "expand into" British
Columbia, according to Tom Barrett of the VANCOUVER SUN.
Nike spokesperson Lee Weinstein said that Nike is planning a
multimillion dollar expansion and BC is in the running as a
possible location. Nike is "looking at building a
substantial office development in Western Canada or the U.S.
for product design and marketing." Weinstein said that B.C.
was in the running with other sites, including the states of
WA, OR, NV, ID, and CA (VANCOUVER SUN, 6/26).
YOUNG'S REPORT PANNED: In an op-ed in the N.Y. TIMES,
Bob Herbert's "In America" column has the header, "Mr. Young
Gets It Wrong." He writes Andrew Young's report on
employment practices at Nike's Asian factories "could hardly
have been more flattering if it had been written by Nike
itself." Herbert: "The kindest thing that can be said at
this point is that Mr. Young was naive. He spent just three
or four hours in each factory and even he acknowledged that
'we probably should have insisted that we bring our own
translators.'" Herbert adds that Young's report "did not
address the issue of wages," and that Young "dodged the
issue of corporal punishment as well" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/27).
