The BOSTON GLOBE is reporting in a front-page piece
that Red Sox OF Wilfredo Cordero, "arrested for allegedly
beating his wife in Cambridge on June 11, was accused by his
former wife during divorce proceedings in 1993 of assaulting
her repeatedly, on one occasion even when she was pregnant."
The GLOBE's Kurkjian & Brelis: "Once word reached Red Sox
officials that the Globe had obtained the [divorce]
document, they abruptly pulled Cordero from the lineup for
last night's game, which was to have been his first Fenway
Park appearance since his arrest. ... The allegations of
earlier domestic violence come at a point when the Red Sox
are trying to put the June 11 episode behind them." The
divorce allegations came while Cordero played for the Expos,
whose GM was current Red Sox Exec VP/GM Dan Duquette. In a
statement issued last night, the Red Sox said, "This evening
[the team] learned for the very first time of allegations
regarding Wilfredo Cordero. ... What the Red Sox have been
told ... raises new serious issues." Duquette told the
GLOBE that he had "no prior knowledge" of the allegations
from the divorce proceedings (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/27).
REAX: The GLOBE's Dan Shaughnessy calls for Cordero's
release: "The Sox say they pulled Cordero off the field when
they first learned of this prior allegation. But a
suspicious mind would wonder if they yanked the left fielder
when they first learned that this information was going
finally public. ... Cordero's got to go. And Duquette's
still got some explaining to do" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/27).
