STADIUM NOTES

In Miami, Metro-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas turned down the
Heat's suggestion that Knight Ridder Chair Tony Ridder
mediate negotiations between Penelas and Miami Mayor Joe
Carollo over the land value of the 59-acre waterfront
property proposed for the new Heat arena. The site is owned
by the city (MIAMI HERALD, 6/26). Penelas: "It's my
responsibility to get the job done. I'm not going to
relinquish that responsibility" (Fort Lauderdale SUN-
SENTINEL, 6/26)....In Denver, although sources are saying a
deal for the Pepsi Center is "fundamentally complete," City
Attorney Dan Muse said there are several "open issues" left
to be resolved between Ascent Entertainment and the city.
He declined to elaborate (DENVER POST, 6/26)....RFK Stadium
has been chosen as the site for the final stages of the
CONCACAF Champions Cup, an international soccer tournament
involving top professional teams in North America, to take
place in August (WASHINGTON POST, 6/25).
