STADIUM NOTES

In Houston, Eddie Sefko: "Latest word is that the
Washington Wizards' home court, the MCI Center, won't be
ready until December, so early-season foes can get one last
visit to the old USAir Arena" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 6/22)....
...In Atlanta, Steve Hummer: "Where the arrogance of Turner
Field's no-outside-food policy ends, the asininity of it all
takes over. ... In fact, the resentment runs high, if the
volume of angry letters, e-mail and voice messages this
newspaper has received is an accurate gauge" (ATLANTA
CONSTITUTION, 6/22)....In L.A., Jim Hodges reports that
"almost" 185,000 paying customers attended the inaugural
races at the new CA Speedway in Fontana (L.A. TIMES, 6/22).
...In Denver, Dan Luzadder reports that HOK Sport's study on
the feasibility of renovating Mile High Stadium "didn't do
much to clear the air." The cost of renovating the 50-year
old stadium will be $206M, while the cost of building "from
scratch" is $203M (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 6/20)....In L.A.,
Patrick McGreevy reported that Sam Katz of Stafford Sports
Ventures wrote to city officials "that renovating the
Coliseum makes better financial sense than building a new
[football] stadium downtown" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 6/20).
