TORONTO REPORT HAS FORMULA ONE RETURNING FOR L.A. RACE

          An announcement of "epic proportions is likely going to
     be made" in L.A. "any day now, and it is going to throw the
     world of motorsports into a tizzy," according to Norris
     McDonald of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL.  The news "will be
     that the U.S. Grand Prix will return to the international
     calendar, perhaps as early as next year," and that it will
     be held in downtown L.A. on Labor Day weekend.  The Ford
     Motor Co. is "expected to be the driving force behind the
     new race."  The GLOBE & MAIL's McDonald writes that F-1 head
     Bernie Ecclestone and F-1 "have been concerned about CART
     for several years now."  But Ecclestone, who is looking to
     float an IPO later this year, is "confident of being able to
     fend off CART's threat around the world."  McDonald: "Taking
     the show back to U.S. soil ... and going deep in CART
     territory ... shows that Ecclestone and his partners are
     going for the jugular" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 6/20).
