EARLY RETURNS HAVE 'HAWKS STADIUM BID LOOKING LIKE A WINNER

The AP is reporting that the Seahawks stadium proposal
is leading 699,239-681,389 in a statewide referendum.
Potential team Owner Paul Allen: "Our projections show us
ahead and the trend is positive. I'm very optimistic at
this point." Precise numbers on how many people voted "were
not immediately available because most counties were voting
by mail" (AP/BOSTON GLOBE, 6/18). In Seattle, Schaefer &
Postman note a "sizable 'yes' vote" in the "populous" Puget
Sound area "appears to have overcome massive anti-stadium
sentiment" in Eastern WA and "virtually every other corner
of the state" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/18). The fact that WA
voters "did not want to lose Seahawk football. ... more than
anything else, was the reason voters apparently" voted for
the proposition, according to a Seattle Times WA telephone
poll by WA-based Elway Research June 7-16 of 512 voters
(Susan Gilmore, SEATTLE TIMES, 6/18). Also in Seattle,
Paulson & Penhale write that "it could be a week before the
final vote is tabulated" (POST-INTELLIGENCER, 6/18).
