NEW FRENCH SPORTS MINISTER BACKS BEER AD BAN AT WORLD CUP

France's new sports minister said she "opposes bending
the law" to allow Budweiser beer ads at the World Cup '98
soccer matches in France, according to an AP report on ESPN
SportsZone. Marie-George Buffet, a Communist party member,
"said she will defend a law that forbids" advertising
cigarettes or alcohol at sporting events, even though
Anheuser-Busch will be a "major" World Cup sponsor. A-B
VP/Corporate Media & Sports Marketing Tony Ponturo: "We'll
stay persistent and try to make our same arguments to the
new government. We're still committed to the World Cup no
     matter what" (AP/ESPN SportsZone, 6/12).
