LEAGUE NOTES

          In Newark, Dan Wasserman writes that next season, MLB
     may try to "beef up interest" in its amateur draft, with
     possibilities including holding the draft at the All-Star
     game and allowing the trading of draft picks (Newark STAR-
     LEDGER, 6/10)....The Professional Bicycle League will begin
     competition this fall with teams in six cities, including
     New York City and Miami.  Chicago, Denver, Houston, L.A.,
     San Diego and San Francisco are "in the running" for the NY-
     based league's four other teams (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 6/9).
     ...MD Baseball Limited Partnership CEO Peter Kirk said he
     has received "up to 400 applications" from players for his
     proposed women's baseball league.  Kirk: "We're getting
     calls from as far away as Japan, where they have baseball
     leagues for girls."  The CO Silver Bullets "have also
     inquired" about a birth in the league (Baltimore SUN, 6/11).
