Before signing with Callaway Golf, John Daly "had
significant debts he couldn't pay," according to Brian
Hewitt of GOLFWEEK. Daly said at the Memorial Tournament in
OH that some of the debts "stemmed from gambling losses" and
that Callaway Chair Ely Callaway paid off the debts prior to
the Memorial. Asked by GOLFWEEK if Callaway "bailed him
out," Daly responded, "Yeah, he has. He's helped me out on
a lot of stuff. It (the debt) is something down the road I
would have been able to do (pay). ... But he (Callaway) told
me, 'I'm going to get everything straight.'" Daly would not
disclose the amount of his gambling losses (GOLFWEEK, 6/7).
KEEPING IT STRAIGHT: Daly discussed his alcoholism in
an interview with ESPN's Andrea Kremer. Daly: "The scariest
thing -- I don't know if I should share this -- but you've
heard of the shakes? It seems like Monday and Tuesday and
Fridays are the worst nights for me. I don't sleep very
good, I shake, sweat. ... And it's amazing that alcohol can
do that to you." More Daly, on fighting alcoholism: "Every
day I want to drink. I love it. There's not a day that
goes by that I don't crave a Miller Lite or a Seven and
Seven." After the piece, ESPN's Mike Lupica said, "I talked
to somebody from the Callaway company the other day and they
said, 'What do you think of the ad campaign?' and I said, 'I
hope it's a lifestyle and not just an ad campaign about him
staying straight'" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 6/8).
