KEN DRYDEN NAMED NEW PRESIDENT OF THE MAPLE LEAFS

Hall of Famer Ken Dryden was named President of the
Maple Leafs this morning. Dryden replaces former
President/GM Cliff Fletcher who resigned last Sunday (AP,
5/30). In Toronto, Paul Hunter writes that up until this
morning, "some observers believed" Blue Jays President Paul
Beeston "wasn't out of the mix," to replace Fletcher
(TORONTO STAR, 5/30). In Toronto, Dave Fuller writes Dryden
is a "close friend" of MLG Dir Brian Bellmore, and it "had
been speculated for months" that Dryden would be joining the
team "in some capacity" (TORONTO SUN, 5/30). The OTTAWA SUN
adds that Dryden's name was one "tossed about" as a
potential NHL commissioner in '92 before the league hired
     Gary Bettman (OTTAWA SUN, 5/30).
