THE MERCHANT OF PENANCE? HBO TO DECIDE ON BOXING ANALYST

          Time Warner execs "are seriously considering benching"
     HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant for the June 14 Oscar de
     la Hoya-David Kamau fight due to "loud and unceasing
     protest" and "threats of violent demonstrations" in reaction
     to his comments about a mariachi band during the April 12 de
     la Hoya-Pernell Whitaker bout, according to Ron Borges of
     the BOSTON GLOBE.  HBO Sports Senior VP/Programming Lou
     DiBella "refused to comment."  HBO Sports President Seth
     Abraham said that "responses" to Merchant's comment "had
     taken place" (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/24).  In N.Y., Bob Raissman
     reported sources as saying that HBO's offices have been
     "flooded with faxes and letters of protest" against Merchant
     appearing on the telecast (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/25).
