John Daly signed an endorsement deal with CA-based
Callaway Golf to endorse the Big Bertha woods and irons.
Daly will play with Callaway clubs when he makes his return
to the PGA Tour at The Memorial this week in OH. Daly has
been undergoing alcohol rehabilitation at the Betty Ford
Center for the past few months. As part of the deal, Daly
agreed to participate in a structured after care program for
alcoholism treatment and to other stipulations which tie his
ongoing affiliation with Callaway to his "successful
maintenance of sobriety and stable behavior." Callaway will
launch an ad campaign titled "Keep It Straight, John" --
suggested by Daly -- in conjunction with Daly's return. The
campaign is created by L.A.-based Dailey & Associates. A TV
campaign will air on PGA Tour broadcasts and ESPN and print
ads will appear immediately in golf magazines (Callaway).
TERMS: In S.F., Mark Soltau noted the Callaway deal
contains four conditions: "Daly must quit drinking, attend
AA meetings at home and on the road, quit gambling and join
Gamblers Anonymous" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/25). A report in the
N.Y. TIMES adds that the "lucrative five-year deal includes
stock options for Daly" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/28).
