A survey conducted for the S.F. EXAMINER shows women
oppose the proposed 49ers stadium-mall complex "by more than
2-1," according to the EXAMINER's Carla Marinucci. The
telephone survey of 404 "likely" S.F. voters was conducted
by DC-based Mason-Dixon Political-Media Research on May 20-
21. Results show that women oppose Proposition D -- the
$100M lease-revenue bond measure -- by a 63-22% margin, and
oppose the Proposition F land use measure 63-25%. Overall,
55% said they would vote no on Prop. D; 32% yes and 13% are
undecided. On Prop. F, 54% would vote no; 34% are in favor
and 12% are undecided (S.F. EXAMINER, 5/25).
DEBARTOLO: 49ers Owner Eddie DeBartolo is interviewed
by Matier & Ross in today's S.F. CHRONICLE. DeBartolo, on
the difference between his stadium plan and the deal Raiders
Owner Al Davis secured in Oakland: "It's a lot different. I
mean Al Davis went in there, he had a ski mask on, and did
what he could. More power to him." More DeBartolo, on the
$100M bond issue: "We're not saying, 'Hand me a check to put
in my pocket.' ... It's no different than you or me or
anyone else going to the bank and borrowing money to build a
house" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/28).
FAMILY FUNDS: The CHRONICLE reported that DeBartolo's
family is "pouring money" into the team's stadium campaign,
which is "outspending opponents by a 16-to-1 margin."
DeBartolo and three daughters lent the campaign $523,000
between April 20 and May 17, bringing their "total
commitment" to $1.25M (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/24).
