The Sharks and San Francisco's Exploratorium science
museum jointly introduced "The Science of Hockey" site on
the World Wide Web last week. The site can be accessed at
www.sj-sharks.com/hockeyscience or www.exploratorium.edu
/sports. Among the scientific aspects examined are skating
mechanics, goalie reaction time, energy generated by player
collisions and ice surface technology. Features include
RealVideo clips of on-ice demonstrations and interviews with
Sharks players and scientists. The site averaged 75,000
hits on Monday and Tuesday after the Yahoo! search engine
selected it as a "Pick of the Week" (THE DAILY).
SHARKEY'S PEOPLE: Matt Levine, Sharks Exec VP/
Development: "The reason we jumped into this with vigor is
that it gets people who don't know much about hockey to
learn about the sport. It allows us to promote the growth
of hockey and build a broader fan base." "The Science of
Hockey" will be part of a live exhibit at the museum
starting in September. The team will host an event at the
museum for suiteholders and sponsors and will hold a tour of
the exhibit for players and their families this fall. The
team will promote the exhibit through in-arena mentions and
placements in its Rink Report newsletter (THE DAILY).
