A MD tax case against the Orioles' Brady Anderson,
along with a similar one filed against former Oriole Mike
Devereaux, goes before an administrative hearing officer
today, "leading off a fight likely to end up in state tax
court," according to Jon Morgan of the Baltimore SUN.
Anderson claims residency in NV but has an apartment in
downtown Baltimore during the season. The state of MD says
that Anderson is a resident and wants him to pay nearly
$500,000 in past taxes and begin paying annual state taxes.
Morgan: "Watching closely will be tax collectors and
millionaire ballplayers from across the country, concerned
that Maryland's controversial initiative could roil the
already unsettled waters surrounding the taxation of
professional athletes." Morgan concludes that if MD's
"interpretation stands up, it could prove costly to
players." Non-residents are taxed 5% for duty days spent in
MD, but if "someone is found to be a resident, he will also
become liable for city and county income taxes, typically
another 2.5 percent, and could have his endorsement and
investment income hit" (Baltimore SUN, 5/22).
