FRANCHISE NOTES

In Kansas City, a phone poll conducted by the Chamber
of Commerce from May 6-14 showed callers were
"overwhelmingly" in favor of a new downtown sports arena. By
a nearly 10-1 margin, responses have been in favor of
building a new arena, with the NBA on top of the tenant wish
list. In all, 3,262 have called in for a new arena,
compared to 371 against it. Of those supporting a new
arena, 1,497 prefer an NBA team (K.C. STAR, 5/22)....In
Minneapolis, the Twins are "expected" to hold a press
conference next week during which team Owner Carl Pohlad
will outline MLB's future in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis
STAR TRIBUNE, 5/22)....Tom Glavine has agreed to a contract
extension with the Braves that will pay him an average of
     $8.5M through 2002 and make him MLB's highest-paid pitcher.
The deal "apparently" is $34M for four years, with a club
option of $8M for a fifth year (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 5/22).
