CANADIAN HEADLINE SPORTS DEBUTS, BUT NEEDS LARGE MARKETS

          Headline Sports, Canada's "graphic-laden" sports-news-
and-information channel, debuted on Canadian TV yesterday
and received "varied reactions," according to Marty York of
the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. The channel isn't seen entirely
in the Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal markets, and York
notes "there's no indication" that this will change in the
"foreseeable future." The "main problem" is that Rogers
Cablesystems Ltd., which services more than 1.5 million
households in Toronto and Vancouver, has not agreed to carry
Headline Sports. Headline Sports VP/Programming &
Production Lee Herberman said that Headline Sports offers "a
totally innovative way of presenting sports information on
television," and said it is the first channel in North
America to keep an updated sports ticker on the air during
commercials spots (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 5/21).
