LEAGUE NOTES

          SportsCar has opened an office in Paris to help serve
     the FIA governing body and European-based manufacturers and
     teams (SportsCar)....Tickets for the '97 U.S. Open Tennis
     Championships in New York will go on sale June 8 at 9:00am
     ET (USTA)....Bill White, former MLB player and NL President,
     asked to comment on MLB's use of interleague play: "When you
     start using gimmicks it shows weakness.  I'd rather that you
     put out a good product, and promote that product properly"
     (N.Y. POST, 5/21)....The Knicks' Patrick Ewing, on NBA
     Commissioner David Stern's decision to suspend players
     following the Knicks-Heat altercation: "I think the
     commissioner took away a golden opportunity for myself and
     my teammates.  ... And if he's going to suspend me or my
     teammates, do it next season.  Don't do it in the playoffs"
     (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/21)....U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ),
     Chair of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and
     Transportation, will hold a Full Committee hearing tomorrow
     on the state of boxing.  Issues to be examined include the
     implementation of boxing legislation; the findings of a
     report on boxing fraud in several Midwestern states; and to
     discuss the feasibility of a national pension system for the
     sport (U.S. Senate Committee).
