MLS RESPONDS TO PLAYERS' ALLEGATION OF TRANSFER FEE PAYMENTS

MLS Commissioner Doug Logan responded yesterday to a
motion for summary judgement filed earlier this month by ten
MLS players. In a statement, Logan said, "The plaintiffs'
main grievance is the payment of transfer fees to out-of-
contract players. Had the plaintiffs made a simple inquiry
prior to filing this motion, they would have realized that
MLS has not -- and will not -- pay or charge a transfer fee
for an out-of-contract player." MLS says that since its
formation in '95, none of the 300 players who have signed
league contracts did so in exchange for a transfer fee. The
league also says that it "never demanded or received any
compensation" for any of the 125 former players who were at
the end of their contracts (MLS).
