RACING NOTES: PENSKE ACQUIRES 70% OF N.C. MOTOR SPEEDWAY

          MI-based Penske Motorsports said yesterday that it has
     acquired about a 70% interest in the Rockingham-based North
     Carolina Motor Speedway in an exchange of stock.  Penske
     said it paid 906,542 shares to Carrie DeWitt, N.C. Motor
     Speedway's majority shareholder, for her stock (CHARLOTTE
     OBSERVER, 5/20).  Penske had been bidding against Bruton
     Smith for controlling interest (THE DAILY).
          VEGAS STRIP: Las Vegas Motor Speedway officials have
     hired the father-son tandem of NH-based Bob and Gary Bahre
     to manage the 1,500-acre motorsports complex that includes
     the 102,000-seat superspeedway.  Bob Bahre was named the
     facility's President; Gary Bahre was named VP (Las Vegas
     Motor Speedway)....In Ft. Worth, Texas Motor Speedway
     officials announced $4M in improvements yesterday, including
     a major upgrade of parking facilities and a 5-foot increase
     in width of the racetrack's "controversial" front stretch in
     response to "scorching criticism" from NASCAR drivers (Jack
     Smith, FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 5/20).
