NO GO FOR U.S. BID FOR 2008 OLYMPIC GAMES

The USOC's Executive Committee has recommended to the
USOC Board of Directors that they vote to support a U.S. bid
city for the 2007 Pan American Games, but not the 2008
Olympic Games. The Committee also recommend that a bid city
should be supported for the 2012 Olympic Games (USOC).
REASONS: USOC Exec Dir Dick Schultz: "With the bidding
process starting basically in September, we're probably two
years behind the curve to get ready for 2008. The fact that
we're behind everyone else, in conjunction with the fact
that the Winter Games will be here in 2002 means there are a
lot of reasons, not necessarily just the competition" (MIAMI
HERALD, 5/16). More Schultz: "Everybody was very impressed
with the interest and enthusiasm of the cities. But I think
there was a strong sense of fairness and responsibility. It
was going to cost a lot of money for these cities and time
and effort, and the chances of getting the Games were slim"
     (Baltimore SUN, 5/16).
