LEAGUE NOTES

In Boston, Frank Dell'Apa writes on MLS under the
header, "MLS In Need Of A Boost." Dell'Apa: "Financial
planning has been an MLS strong point. Now, the league
needs to attract more charismatic players, even if that
means stretching the salary cap. After the novelty of the
first season, MLS has lacked personality this year" (BOSTON
GLOBE, 5/16). In L.A., Grahame Jones writes on past
failures of pro soccer teams in L.A. and the Galaxy's
attempt to establish itself in the market: "The trick
[Galaxy owners] are trying to learn now is how to keep a
team here. Permanently. Or at least what passes for
permanently in Southern California" (L.A. TIMES, 5/16)....In
Denver, Mike Judson, on the ABL-WNBA: "You can dress up the
Women's NBA any way you want. ... The [ABL] has better
players. Lots of them. ... The competition between the
women's leagues has become a case of image vs. reality. I
vote for reality" (DENVER POST, 5/13).
