MURDOCH NOT GIVING UP IN QUEST FOR U.S. DBS PARTNERSHIP

News Corp. Chair Rupert Murdoch's efforts to enter the
satellite-TV business in the U.S. is profiled in a front-
page feature in the WALL STREET JOURNAL under the header,
"So Far, Murdoch's Bid To Enter Satellite TV In U.S. Goes
Nowhere." His plan to partner with EchoStar Communications
on a national DBS service "has been all but shot down," and
Murdoch "has been scrambling to find another partner."
Those close to Murdoch say "he now realizes he rushed into
the wrong deal with EchoStar, without firm agreements on
management or on strategy. He also underestimated how much
News Corp. would have to spend, and he misjudged the
ferocity of opposition from competitors, his shareholders
and Washington lawmakers." But Murdoch is "still hunting
for a way into the U.S. DBS market, and any deal he strikes
could lead to shifting alliances." Murdoch is said to be
"exploring deals" with Primestar Partners and has "reopened
talks" with DirecTV (Lippman, Robichaux, & Gruley, WALL
     STREET JOURNAL, 5/15).
