PACKERS SEEK NFL APPROVAL TO ISSUE ADDITIONAL STOCK IN TEAM

A notice sent to Packers shareholders calls for the
consideration of a special issue of a new class of stock,
according to Charles Gardner of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL
SENTINEL. But Packers President Bob Harlan noted yesterday
that the NFL has not yet approved any stock sale, and the
notice "merely" notifies shareholders that the issue will be
discussed at the franchise's annual meeting on May 28.
Harlan: "All we're trying to do is be prepared. This is
just legal talk right now to see where we are. We have not
even been assured if we'll have an (NFL) opinion by the
annual meeting, let alone know what we're going to do." The
team has proposed selling additional stock in the publicly
owned corporation, "although the type of stock would not be
identical to the 4,634 shares now held by 1,915 team
owners." Gardner notes that Harlan is "concerned about the
Packers' level of cash reserves," estimated to be $21-23M.
If the plan is approved, Harlan has said he hopes to start a
stadium trust fund (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 5/15).
