OPRAH, ELDRICK. ELDRICK, OPRAH: TIGER APPEARS ON "OPRAH"

Tiger Woods was the guest on "The Oprah Winfrey Show"
yesterday. The show was taped on Monday. The following are
excerpts from Woods' appearance: Woods, on Nike and its
commercial about him which states, "There are still courses
in the U.S. I am not allowed to play because of the color of
my skin": "They know me, and I think they kind of felt the
same way I did, that golf needed to be shaken up.
Unfortunately, that's kind of an issue where there's no gray
area -- either you like it or you don't." Woods said he was
not involved in the making of the commercial because of his
pro schedule. Earl Woods, who joined Tiger on stage midway
through the show, on whether Tiger is "bigger than golf":
"Absolutely not. He will never be bigger than golf. He
will transcend golf in that he will venture outside of the
boundaries of golf and make contributions. But to say that
Tiger is bigger than golf, no. No one person is ever bigger
than the sport that they play" ("Oprah," 4/24).
